serial #659, 10 bore, 30” damascus barrels with mostly bright very fine bores showing a little scattered mild oxidation and a few tiny dings. The barrels are mostly a mix of pewter gunmetal and mild gray-brown patina with a bit of light to moderate oxidation nearer the breeches and otherwise strong damascus patterns throughout. The barrel address remains strong and the breech plugs retain a healthy amount of original case-hardened colors, and feature platinum blowout plugs. The undersides show period London proof marks and are also marked “3 1/2 drams powder / 1 1/2 oz shot”. The lockplates and tang also show fine case-hardened colors throughout drifting to a pleasant smoky gray and are embellished with wonderful English foliate scrollwork throughout and attractive pheasant game scenes. The triggerguard also retains a healthy amount of original bright blue with some flaking to gray along the tang and extensively embellished with excellent scrollwork throughout, the bow of the guard also with a family crest of a bird with wings outstretched standing atop a sprouting stump along with the motto “Avancez”, traditionally the motto of the Hill family though the bird itself remains elusive. The checkered walnut stock remains in very good condition showing some light honest wear overall, the major apology being a moderate 1 1/2” chip along the bottom of the forend near the wedge, the wedge now exposed and the bottom half of the left escutcheon broken off and lost to the years. The smooth steel buttplate shows a small engraved dog scene at the heel and its face is neatly engraved in script with the name “Jack Long”. The original ramrod is intact and the locks are crisp with in-time hammers. The gun includes its original case that appears to be of walnut, with brass corner reinforcements and lid escutcheon engraved with the same familial crest as the gun. The case remains in fine condition, the right end a little bit charred from some old fire damage. The interior of the case retains its original maker’s label and embossed leather lining and there are five compartments complete with their lids. The case contains a complement of original accessories including: a few cleaning rod attachments, brass toppers for both a powder flask and shot pouch (the bodies not present), glass oil bottle, key, mainspring vise, two ebony-handled tools, wad cutter and a leather pouch containing extra nipples, a nipple wrench and a turnscrew/multi-tool. A very respectable double from an excellent quality London maker. (13B11489-2) {ANTIQUE} (1800/2200)
